Dr Xavier Guegan is a Senior Lecturer (equivalent to Associate Professor) in Colonial and Postcolonial History at the University of Winchester's School of Humanities. He holds a 'Teaching with Enhanced Responsibility for Research' role. He earned his History degree from Université de Nice (France) in 2000, followed by an MA in Modern History from the University of Northumbria (2001). His PhD in Visual Culture and Colonial History (2009) focused on photography's role in colonial narratives.
His research examines British and French imperialism in India and Algeria, emphasizing visual culture, anti-colonial resistance, and postcolonial theory. Notable works include analyzing colonial photography's role in constructing racial identities and editing volumes on British imperial travelers. He served as Director of the Modern History Research Centre (2015–2019) and currently chairs the Winchester Branch of the Historical Association.
Dr Guegan's work bridges historical scholarship with public engagement, organizing exhibitions like 'India through Photography' (2010) and contributing to academic journals such as Britain and the World. He actively supervises PhD students researching decolonization, imperial visual studies, and contested colonial legacies.
