Dr. Aglaia De Angeli is a Senior Lecturer in the School of History, Anthropology, Philosophy and Politics at Queen's University Belfast, specializing in modern Chinese history with a focus on Sino-Western interactions. She leads research within the Sir Robert Hart Project, examining the legacy of the Chinese Imperial Maritime Customs Service. Her work bridges legal history, visual culture, and transnational diplomacy, particularly between China and Europe.
Her research interests include historical photography's role in shaping modern Chinese identity, the legal frameworks of Republican China, and the dynamics of colonial imperialism in Northeast Asia. She has pioneered studies on Sino-Italian and Sino-Irish diplomatic exchanges, as well as the visual and material culture of 19th-20th century China.
De Angeli's recent projects analyze competing imperialisms in Manchuria and Northeast Asia, British media coverage of the Cultural Revolution, and the semiotics of modern Chinese leadership symbolism. She has curated major photographic archives including the Sir Robert Hart Collection, integrating digital humanities into historical research.
Her academic contributions span edited volumes, peer-reviewed chapters, and international conferences, with a focus on interdisciplinary approaches to Chinese modernity. She actively supervises PhD students in Sino-Western relations, visual historiography, and legal history of modern China.
