Rui Hua is an Assistant Professor of History at Boston University, specializing in Modern East Asian History with a focus on law and empire, transnational legal connections, and Manchuria. Their research explores how borderland populations shaped inter-imperial rivalries between China, Japan, and Russia through legal engagements, and they are currently working on two book projects: one examining agrarian legal modernity in Manchuria (1881–1957) and another analyzing the role of non-agrarian ecologies in twentieth-century Northeast Asian legal order.

Rui Hua teaches courses on modern Chinese and Japanese history, as well as historical research methodologies. They welcome collaborations and conversations with students and scholars.
Awards and fellowships include a postdoctoral fellowship in Agrarian Studies at Yale University.
