Owen White is the H. Fletcher Brown Chair of Humanities and Professor of History at the University of Delaware, serving as Interim Chair of the Department of History. He specializes in the history of imperialism and colonialism, with a focus on modern France and its empire. Educated at the University of Exeter (B.A.) and the University of Oxford (Ph.D.), White’s research explores themes such as colonial governance, economic systems, and social structures in French West Africa and Algeria.

His research has been recognized with the Eugen Weber Book Prize and the UD Excellence in Teaching Award (2020). Current projects include co-editing the Cambridge Companion to the French Empire and studying African responses to colonial taxation.
Teaching focuses on European and world history, imperial studies, and graduate seminars. His work bridges colonial economic history, cultural studies, and postcolonial critique.
