Xavier Buxton is an Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Warwick's Faculty of Arts and an Early Career Research Associate at the Institute of Classical Studies, London. He joined Warwick in 2021 as a Sessional Tutor, progressing to Teaching Fellow in 2022 and Honorary Research Fellow in 2023.
He holds a BA in English Literature from Cambridge, a PGCE from Exeter, and an MSt and DPhil in Classics from Oxford, preceded by a Henry Fellowship at Yale.
Buxton's research centers on archaic and classical Greek culture, particularly the emotional landscape of Athens and the reception of antiquity. His doctoral thesis examines Aeschylean tragedy's role in cultivating fear as a civic virtue, bridging ancient thought with modern cognitive science. He also investigates collective emotions in drama and ancient festivals, and has a longstanding interest in translation and reception, especially of Greek lyric poetry.
His sole published article to date, 'Sappho and Shelley: Lyric in the Dative' (2011), explores Shelley's adaptation of Sappho, reflecting his focus on cross-temporal poetic dialogue.
Buxton collaborates on projects such as the ancient festivals study with Professor Eric Csapo and co-organizes Warwick's Ancient Drama Festival, fostering interdisciplinary engagement with classical performance.
