Prof. Xandra Kramer is a Professor of Private International Law at Utrecht University (0.2 FTE) and holds a full professorship in Private Law (with a focus on international and European civil procedure) at Erasmus University Rotterdam (0.8 FTE). She also serves as a Deputy Judge at the Rotterdam District Court. She earned her law degree cum laude from Leiden University and completed her PhD on provisional measures and private international law in 2001. Her academic career includes roles as assistant and associate professor at Erasmus School of Law before becoming a full professor in 2011.
Her research focuses on private international law, civil procedure, and comparative law, emphasizing the intersection of economic efficiency and procedural fairness. Key areas include collective actions, international contracts, digitization of justice, and access to justice mechanisms. She leads projects for the Dutch Ministry of Justice and European institutions, addressing topics like SLAPPs, litigation funding, and climate litigation.
Dr. Kramer has received prestigious grants including NWO VIDI (2010), ERC Consolidator (2016), and NWO Vici (2020). She chairs the Law Section at KNAW and serves on the European Law Institute’s Council. Her publications span edited volumes on civil justice and private international law, including Delivering Justice: A Holistic and Multidisciplinary Approach (2022) and Research Methods in Private International Law (2024).
Her awards include election to the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) and Institute de Droit International (IDI). She advises European institutions and contributes to journals like the Netherlands International Law Review. Current projects explore sustainable cost mechanisms for civil litigation and transnational judicial cooperation.
