Elaine Mak is a Professor of Jurisprudence and Legal Theory at Utrecht University, where she has held academic and leadership roles since 2016. She is currently the Dean of the Faculty of Law, Economics and Governance and previously served as Vice-Dean of Education (2018-2023). Her research integrates legal theory with comparative constitutional law, focusing on constitutional institutions, judicial ethics, and the professionalization of legal education.
- Education: PhD from Erasmus University Rotterdam (2008, cum laude), LLM degrees from Université de Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne and Erasmus University Rotterdam.
- Research Themes: Institutions for Open Societies (IOS), judicial cultures in the EU, and the globalization of legal systems.
Her recent work explores judicial ethics, climate litigation, and procedural justice in legal contexts. She has authored influential publications such as Judicial Decision-Making in a Globalized World (2013) and Constitutionalism in Context (2023). Mak also contributes to media discussions on constitutional issues and legal professionalism.
