XU Hairuo

Xu Hairuo is a Senior Lecturer at the National University of Singapore (NUS), specializing in semiconductor nanomaterials research and educational technology innovation. He holds a B.Sc. from Peking University (2003) and a Ph.D. from NUS (2009). His research focuses on synthesizing and characterizing nanomaterials with tunable optical properties. He is actively involved in academic administration, serving as Department coordinator for Graduate Teaching Assistant assignments and training, and as staff advisor for the NUS American Chemical Society Student Chapter (NUS ACSSC).

Teaching Contributions: In AY2024/2025, he teaches CM2133 Foundations of Physical Chemistry, CM3131 Applications of Physical Chemistry, CM3141 Instrumental Techniques in Analytical Chemistry, and CM3192 Physical and Analytical Chemistry Experiments. He received the Faculty Teaching Excellence Award in 2016/2017 for his pedagogical innovations.

Research Themes: Xu’s work bridges nanotechnology and optics, exploring topics like nanoparticle fractionation using carbon nanotube arrays (Nanotechnology, 2010), structural analysis of doped zinc oxide nanoparticles (J. Phys. Chem. C, 2008), and three-photon absorption in quantum dots (Opt. Express, 2008). His 2015 CDTL Brief introduced a groundbreaking paperless lab report system, reflecting his dual focus on scientific and educational advancements.

Leadership Roles: Through his coordination of teaching assistant programs and student chapter advising, Xu contributes to nurturing the next generation of chemists while advancing laboratory practices through digital solutions.
