Wouter Veraart is a Full Professor at the Faculty of Law of Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, holding appointments in Legal Theory and Legal History, the Kooijmans Institute, and the Boundaries of Law. He is Chair of the VU-VUmc Research Integrity Committee (CWI) and actively involved in projects like Decolonizing Sustainability Research. His research focuses on legal philosophy, colonial slavery, apologies, and criminal law, often critiquing the inflexibility of legal systems and their historical impacts. Recent work includes analyzing colonial slavery’s legal recognition and national apologies for historical injustices.
Key publications include a 2024 commentary on Anatole France’s *Crainquebille*, exploring legal precepts and judicial critique, and a 2023 article addressing legal hurdles to recognizing colonial slavery as a crime against humanity. His 2022 works examine functional extreme violence and the ethics of national apologies for colonial legacies.
Veraart advises PhD theses (8 listed, names withheld) and lectures on legal theory, restorative justice, and jurisprudence. He frequently engages in media discussions on freedom of speech, democracy, and legal integrity, emphasizing critical legal perspectives on societal issues.
