Woon-Kai Low is an Associate Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, St. John's University. His research focuses on mRNA translation mechanisms in eukaryotic cells, developing anticancer therapies targeting translation initiation, and recombinant protein production in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic systems. He teaches courses such as BIT 270/PHS 270 Intro to Biotechnology, PHS 2201 Biopharmaceutical Chemistry, and TOX 1401 Molecular Toxicogenomics.
Research Interests: Low's work explores therapeutic interventions for cancer using small molecules and natural product derivatives, with a focus on inhibiting translation initiation (e.g., eIF4A targeting). His lab also investigates protein production systems, including virus-like particles in E. coli and recombinant bacterial delivery systems for therapeutics.
Publications: His recent studies include advancements in virus-like particle production, mechanism-of-action studies of pateamine analogs, and development of PARP1 inhibitors. These contributions highlight his expertise in molecular biology, drug design, and cancer biology.
Low is based at St. Albert Hall Queens Rm 104C and can be reached at 718-990-8288. His research aligns with broader efforts in translational medicine and biopharmaceutical innovation.
