Woochan Jang is a Research Assistant Professor at Tufts University School of Medicine, affiliated with the Department of Developmental, Molecular and Chemical Biology. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Missouri (1997) and has held academic appointments in the School of Medicine since 2007. His research focuses on olfactory stem cell biology, neural regeneration, and mechanisms of aging in sensory systems. Key areas include understanding stem cell activation, multipotency, and the regenerative capacity of olfactory tissues.
His work explores how injury and aging affect neural stem cells, with a particular emphasis on transcriptional regulation (e.g., p63, Ascl1) and signaling pathways (e.g., Notch, retinoic acid). He investigates functional recovery in olfactory circuits after damage and the molecular basis of olfactory dysfunction in diseases like schizophrenia. Jang’s studies utilize in vitro models (neurospheres) and in vivo transplantation to assess stem cell behavior and engraftment potential.
- Grants: Multiple NIH grants (2009–2019) funded studies on age-related olfactory loss mechanisms and anatomical bases of olfactory dysfunction.
- Affiliations: Tufts University School of Medicine, Department of Developmental, Molecular and Chemical Biology; previously in Anatomy and Cellular Biology.
Publications highlight his expertise in stem cell dynamics, neuroregeneration, and olfactory system biology, with notable contributions to understanding globose basal cells and reserve neural stem cell populations.
