James Schwob is the George A. Bates Professor of Histology and Professor in the Department of Developmental, Molecular and Chemical Biology at Tufts University School of Medicine. His research focuses on neural development mechanisms using the olfactory system as a model, particularly studying neurogenesis, neuronal diversity, and therapeutic applications of olfactory stem cells. He holds both M.D. and Ph.D. degrees from Washington University in St. Louis and a B.S. from the University of Iowa.
Research interests center on understanding neural development processes including olfactory neuron generation, axon guidance mechanisms, and exploiting neurocompetent stem cells for regenerative therapies. His work explores neuronal diversity through odorant receptor gene expression patterns and synaptic specificity in olfactory pathways.
Publications consistently focus on olfactory epithelium biology, stem cell dynamics, and regenerative mechanisms. Recent work (2019-2025) emphasizes horizontal basal cell functions, injury-induced regeneration models, molecular regulation of neurogenesis, and clinical applications for sensory disorders.
