Winifred Tate is a Professor of Anthropology at Colby College, specializing in political anthropology with a focus on Latin America, particularly Colombia. Her research examines democracy, citizenship, and political change amid paramilitary violence, human rights abuses, and illicit economies. She previously worked as a Colombia policy expert at the Washington Office on Latin America before completing her doctorate at New York University.

Research Interests:
Tate’s work investigates the legacies of Colombian paramilitarism, globalization, and community resistance. Her award-winning book Counting the Dead (2007) explores human rights activism in Colombia, while her second book Drugs, Thugs, and Diplomats (2015) critiques U.S. policy in Colombia. Her current project, Paramilitary Politics, analyzes the historical and contemporary impacts of violence on rural communities.
