Amarilys Estrella is an Assistant Professor of Anthropology at Rice University, with affiliations at the Center for African and African American Studies and the Center for the Study of Gender, Women and Sexuality. Her research examines intersections of race, gender, and transnational movements, focusing on Black Latin American identity, human rights, and anti-racist activism. She investigates how Blackness is constructed among stateless grassroots activists in the Dominican Republic and co-edited Harmonizing Latina Visions and Voices, exploring mujerismo through art and scholarship.
Dr. Estrella has received prestigious fellowships including the ACLS Emerging Voices Fellowship (2020-2021) and the National Women’s Studies Association Women of Color Leadership Project Fellowship (2023). She co-led the BRIDGE Award-winning project Stressful Crossings: How Black Immigrants' Health is Immobilized in Houston with Dr. Victoria Massie. Her research emphasizes marginalized voices in contexts of systemic oppression, blending ethnography with advocacy.
Teaching courses like Black Decolonial Feminisms in the Americas and When Human Rights Fail, she integrates activism into scholarship. Her work addresses urgent issues such as paramilitary violence against Black women in the Dominican Republic and community resilience during crises.
