Jasmin Hristov

Dr. Jasmin Hristov is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at the University of Guelph, and a core member of the Guelph Institute of Development Studies. She previously held an Assistant Professor position at UBC Okanagan. Her research focuses on political violence, paramilitarism, economic globalization, agrarian conflicts, and gender violence in Latin America, with a particular emphasis on Colombia, Honduras, Guatemala, and Mexico.

Education: PhD in Sociology from York University (2013).

Research Interests: Dr. Hristov examines how global capitalist systems intersect with state and non-state violence to dispossess marginalized communities of land and resources. Her work critiques neoliberal policies that enable pro-capitalist violence, particularly against Indigenous and peasant groups. She also studies the gendered dimensions of violence, including the commodification of women and children in conflict zones.

Grants & Projects: Principal Investigator for SSHRC-funded projects including 'Land Violence, Security and Development in Honduras, Guatemala and Mexico' (2021–2026), and earlier studies on Central American land dispossession. Her research involves extensive fieldwork, including over 100 interviews and focus groups with affected communities.

Awards: 2019 Early Investigator Award from the Canadian Sociological Association for her impactful research on violence and development. Finalist for the WOLA-Duke Book Award (2010) for Blood and Capital: The Paramilitarization of Colombia.

Advising: Supervised Jessica Hart (MA in Sociology). Her mentorship emphasizes fieldwork ethics in high-risk environments.

Labs/Initiatives: Leads the Violence and Land Dispossession Project, documenting human rights violations linked to land conflicts in Honduras.
