Wim Wuyts is an Assistant Professor at KU Leuven, affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine and the Department of Chronic Diseases and Metabolism. He leads the Laboratory of Respiratory Diseases and Thoracic Surgery (BREATHE), where his research focuses on pulmonary fibrosis, interstitial lung diseases, and respiratory pathologies. Dr. Wuyts serves on the Council of the Faculty of Medicine and the Council of the Department of Chronic Diseases and Metabolism as senior academic staff.
Dr. Wuyts' primary research interests center around pulmonary fibrosis, particularly idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) and its mechanisms. His work spans multiple dimensions including:
- Genetic risk factors in familial pulmonary fibrosis
- Early detection methods for pulmonary fibrosis
- Novel therapeutic approaches for fibrotic lung diseases
- Small airway disease and its relationship to chronic lung conditions
- Implementation of screening programs for at-risk populations
His recent publication record demonstrates a strong focus on translational research bridging basic science and clinical applications. The majority of his work examines the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying pulmonary fibrosis, with particular attention to alveolar stem cell exhaustion, cellular plasticity, and the role of small airway disease. His research increasingly incorporates advanced computational methods, including deep generative models for drug discovery.
Dr. Wuyts is actively involved in multiple significant research projects, serving as promotor or co-promotor on grants totaling millions of euros with end dates extending to 2028. His most notable projects include:
- "Elucidating the Active Role of Traction bronchiectasis and Honeycombing in IPF's persistent fibrogenesis (EARTH-IPF)" (2024-2027) as Promotor
- "Multimodal longitudinal follow-up of the largest cohort of familial pulmonary fibrosis patients to date" (2024-2028) as Promotor
- "Druglike FAPIs with maximal target residence time: from chemical discovery to preclinical evaluation in oncology and fibrosis theranostics" (2024-2028) as Co-promotor
- "Implementation of a standardized screening program for IPF patients and relatives in Flanders" (2021-2024) as Promotor
As part of the BREATHE laboratory, Dr. Wuyts collaborates with an extensive multidisciplinary team of clinicians, researchers, and technicians focused on respiratory diseases. His laboratory maintains strong connections with clinical departments at University Hospitals Leuven, facilitating rapid translation of research findings into clinical practice. The team employs advanced methodologies including high-resolution imaging, computational modeling, and molecular biology techniques to investigate respiratory pathologies.
