Gianluca Matteoli is an Associate Professor at KU Leuven's Faculty of Medicine, affiliated with the Department of Chronic Diseases and Metabolism. He is a member of the Leuven One Health Institute and LISCO (KU Leuven Institute for Single Cell Omics). His research focuses on mucosal immunology, gastroenterology, innate immunity, intestinal motility, and the enteric nervous system. He serves as Promotor/Co-Promotor in several high-impact projects, including targeting fibroblasts in colorectal cancer and investigating the role of fat in Crohn's disease. He teaches courses such as 'Hot Topics in Gastroenterology' and 'Advances in Gastroenterology.'
Recent projects include exploring enteric glia- immune cell synergy in intestinal inflammation resolution (2025-2028) and developing drug-like FAPIs for oncology and fibrosis (2024-2028). He leads the Translational Research in GastroIntestinal Disorders group and contributes to the KU Leuven Flow Cytometry core facility. His work bridges basic science and clinical applications in gastrointestinal disorders.
