Lucas Wauters is an Assistant Professor at KU Leuven, affiliated with the Translational Research in GastroIntestinal Disorders unit within the Department of Chronic Diseases and Metabolism, Faculty of Medicine. His research focuses on gastrointestinal disorders, particularly functional dyspepsia, inflammatory bowel disease, and the gut microbiome.
Dr. Wauters' primary research interests include:
- Functional Dyspepsia pathophysiology and mechanisms
- Gut microbiome and microbial metabolites in GI disorders
- Neurogastroenterology and the gut-brain axis
- Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) and transplantation
- Clinical guidelines for gastrointestinal motility disorders
His recent publications (2024-2025) demonstrate a strong focus on functional gastrointestinal disorders, particularly functional dyspepsia. These works explore the duodenal microenvironment, microbial metabolites like indole-3-acetate, brain connectivity patterns, and immune responses in these conditions. He also contributes significantly to research on IBD and transplantation, as well as European clinical guidelines for conditions like chronic nausea and vomiting.
Dr. Wauters serves as Promotor for several research projects including "Budesonide in Eosinophilic Oesophagitis" (2025-2029) and "The small intestinal microbiome: the next big thing in nutrition?" (2024-2026).
Within the academic structure at KU Leuven, Dr. Wauters is a member of the Council of the Faculty of Medicine and the Council of the Department of Chronic Diseases and Metabolism.
