Wim Douven

Wim Douven is a Professor at IHE Delft Institute for Water Education, specializing in integrated water and environmental management. He has over 20 years of experience coordinating international master programs, supervising PhD students, and leading large-scale multi-disciplinary research projects. His work focuses on climate change adaptation, river basin management, and capacity building in developing countries, particularly in Southeast Asia and the Mekong River Basin.

Key areas of research include wetlands management (WETwin project), climate change impacts on water resources (PRoACC program), and spatial planning strategies for natural resource management (AFROMAISON project). He has pioneered blended-learning methods in international education and established Memoranda of Understanding with global partners.

Recent projects include strengthening institutional capacities in Vietnam and Mongolia through Nuffic NICHE-funded initiatives, and developing the Mekong River Commission's IWRM Competency Framework. His work emphasizes practical solutions for sustainable infrastructure development in flood-prone regions, as demonstrated in the Roads and Floods project in the Mekong Delta.
