William T. Schapaugh, Jr. is a Professor and soybean breeder in the Department of Agronomy at Kansas State University. His research program develops soybean varieties for Kansas, targeting improved seed yield, genetic diversity, and abiotic stress tolerance to expand viable production across 4+ million acres of the state.
His educational background includes:
- B.S. from Iowa State University
- M.S. from Purdue University
- Ph.D. from Purdue University
Dr. Schapaugh's research centers on developing maturity group 3-5 commodity and specialty soybean varieties through advanced breeding technologies including marker assisted selection, genomic selection, and high throughput phenotyping. His program identifies heat/drought tolerance traits, combines pathogen resistances, and enhances genetic diversity to bridge performance gaps between exotic and elite germplasm. This work provides genetic resources for industry partners and direct on-farm production.
Funding comes from the State of Kansas, Kansas Soybean Commission, United Soybean Board, North Central Soybean Research Program, and USDA. His program engaged over 14 undergraduate, graduate, and post-doctoral students from Agronomy, Plant Pathology, and Biological and Agricultural Engineering departments in the past year.
Dr. Schapaugh maintains active collaborations with soybean researchers across Kansas State University and the United States to leverage collective expertise in genetic improvement.
