William Swart is a Professor in the Department of Marketing and Supply Chain Management at the College of Business, East Carolina University (ECU). He has held significant academic leadership roles, including Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at ECU, Dean of Engineering at New Jersey Institute of Technology and Old Dominion University, and Associate Dean at California State University. His academic background includes a Ph.D. in Operations Research and an M.S. in Industrial and Systems Engineering from Georgia Tech, and a B.S. in Industrial Engineering with Honors from Clemson University.
His research and professional work span operations research, management science, supply chain optimization, and innovation systems. Dr. Swart is known for integrating practical industry experience with academic rigor, having held key roles at Burger King Corporation and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). His work has influenced economic development in Turkey, labor systems at Taco Bell, and operational efficiency at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center.
Dr. Swart has received numerous accolades for his contributions, including two Franz Edelman Finalist Awards, the INFORMS Achievement in Operations Research Medal, and recognition from NASA. He is a Fellow of the International Institute of Informatics and Systemics and won the 2018 Educational Innovations Award from the Decision Sciences Institute. He serves on the US Technical Advisory Group (US TAG) for ISO 56000 standards on Innovation Management, representing the U.S. internationally. Fluent in four languages, he has professional experience across Latin America, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.
