William Solecki is a Professor in the Department of Geography at Hunter College, City University of New York (CUNY). He is also the Founder and Director Emeritus of the CUNY Institute for Sustainable Cities. His research focuses on urban environmental change, resilience, and adaptation transitions. He holds a Ph.D. (1990) and M.A. (1987) in Geography from Rutgers University, and a B.A. (1984) in Geography from Columbia University.
Research Contributions: Dr. Solecki co-led climate impacts studies in the New York and New Jersey region, including the New York City Panel on Climate Change (NPCC). He served as a lead author for the IPCC Working Group II Urban Areas chapter (2014) and coordinating lead author for the US National Climate Assessment's Urbanization, Infrastructure, and Vulnerability chapter. He co-founded the Urban Climate Change Research Network (UCCRN) and edited journals such as Current Opinion in Environmental Sustainability and Journal of Extreme Events.
Leadership Roles: He previously directed the CUNY Institute for Sustainable Cities (2006–2014) and served as interim Director of the Science and Resilience Institute at Jamaica Bay. His work emphasizes urban resilience, climate adaptation, and sustainable cities.
