Dr. William Smyth is a Senior Lecturer in Mathematics at Ulster University's School of Computing, Engineering and Intelligent Systems. With over twenty-five years of experience in higher education, he serves as Course Director for the BSc (Hons) in Computing with Applied Mathematics and has been instrumental in developing innovative curricula that bridge mathematics, computing, and finance. His work spans both theoretical and applied domains, from quantum optics to machine learning applications in finance.
Dr. Smyth's educational background includes:
- BSc in Mathematics from Queen's University Belfast
- PhD in Theoretical Physics (quantum optics) from Queen's University Belfast
Dr. Smyth specializes in the application of machine learning in finance, with research spanning quantitative finance, sustainable investing, and interpretable AI. His work has evolved from early research in quantum optics to contemporary applications of machine learning in portfolio optimization. He is particularly known for developing Markowitz-Informed Neural Networks (MINNs), which provide transparent covariance structures for portfolio optimization, avoiding the "black-box" nature of traditional AI approaches. His research also includes the creation of IQ, a robust co-movement measure that underpins the widely adopted "squeezing" technique for covariance matrix estimation.
Analysis of Dr. Smyth's recent publications shows a strong focus on applying machine learning techniques to financial portfolio management. His work consistently addresses the challenge of balancing statistical rigor with practical applicability in finance. The research demonstrates increasing sophistication in using entropy, clustering, and eigenvalue analysis to enhance portfolio stability while maintaining interpretability - a crucial factor for real-world financial applications where transparency is essential.
Dr. Smyth has received multiple scientific awards for his contributions:
- Professional Practice Innovation Award (2022)
- Fellow of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications
- Fellow of the Higher Education Academy
- Awards for research and teaching excellence (most recently in 2023)
As an academic leader, Dr. Smyth has directed significant curriculum innovations, including the creation of the first undergraduate higher-level apprenticeship degree in Financial Technology in the UK and Ireland. His work has extended beyond academia through his consultancy with Prime Value Capital Management, a Dublin-based international private equity firm. Dr. Smyth has also led national curriculum development projects in Northern Ireland and collaborated with the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics in England, demonstrating his commitment to improving mathematics education at multiple levels.
Dr. Smyth is affiliated with the Intelligent Systems Research Centre at Ulster University and serves as a committee member of the Irish Branch of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications. His work contributes to Sustainable Development Goals related to quality education and industry innovation.
