William (Liam) O'Brien Jr. is an Associate Professor and Director of the Master of Architecture Program at MIT. He leads WOJR: Organization for Architecture and previously served as Design Director of Samara, a design and manufacturing company spun off from Airbnb (2018–2022). His academic background includes teaching at UC Berkeley as Bernard Maybeck Fellow and at The Ohio State University as LeFevre Emerging Practitioner Fellow. Before MIT, he was an Assistant Professor at the University of Texas at Austin, focusing on graduate theory and design studios.
He holds a graduate degree from Harvard GSD, where he earned the Department of Architecture Faculty Design Award. His research explores intersections of architecture, computation, and fabrication, with a focus on sustainable and innovative design methodologies.
