Joyce Hwang is a Professor of Architecture at the University at Buffalo, State University of New York, and Director of Ants of the Prairie, an architectural practice focused on ecological innovation. She holds a B.Arch from Cornell University and an M.Arch from Princeton University. Her work integrates wildlife habitats into urban environments, emphasizing coexistence between humans and nature. Notable projects include Bat Cloud and Habitat Wall, which explore living architecture and urban biodiversity.

Research interests center on ecological design, urban wildlife advocacy, and post-industrial site transformation. Key awards include the WOJR/Civitella Ranieri Architecture Prize (2024), Architectural League Emerging Voices Award (2014), and multiple fellowships from NYFA and MacDowell. Hwang is also a co-editor of Beyond Patronage and Core Organizer of Dark Matter University.
Her practice extends to academic and community engagement, including organizing the Hive City Habitat Design Competition and serving on editorial boards for architectural journals. Projects like Bat Tower and Trellis at Silo City exemplify her focus on reimagining urban spaces to support biodiversity and ecological resilience.
