William McShane is a Research Professor at the Halle Institute for Economic Research (IWH) since August 2023 and concurrently holds the position of Assistant Professor at The American University of Paris. His research focuses on financial stability, the real effects of financial intermediation, and the dynamics of M&A and R&D tax policies. McShane earned a bachelor's degree in psychology from Beloit College (USA), a master's in international economics and finance from Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg, and a doctorate from IWH, where he also served as a doctoral student and research assistant to IWH President Reint E. Gropp.
His research explores how financial policies shape corporate strategies, such as the role of R&D tax credits in driving acquisitions of startups and the long-term competitive impacts of credit crunches. He contributes to the IWH Team Research Network and affiliated labs, advancing discourse on financial systems and economic policy.
