William McDonald is an Adjunct Professor of Philosophy at the University of New England (UNE), affiliated with the School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences. He holds a PhD from the University of Sydney and has taught globally, including at the University of Copenhagen and Ashoka University, India. His research focuses on the history of philosophy, particularly Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, and Foucault, alongside comparative religion, philosophical psychology, ethics, and aesthetics.
McDonald is a leading Kierkegaard scholar, co-editing the six-volume Kierkegaard’s Concepts (Routledge) and contributing entries to the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy. He has held research fellowships in Denmark, the USA, Australia, the UK, and Slovakia. His work explores intersections between existentialism, comparative religion, and emotional philosophy, including analyses of boredom, anxiety, and spiritual transformation.
McDonald’s publications span books, edited volumes, and journal articles on Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, and cross-cultural philosophy. He has also produced theater works and documentaries addressing social and ethical themes, including True Sex (1997) and Womb Loom (1996), as well as films on Indigenous Australian activism and healthcare.
His academic contributions bridge philosophy, religion, and cultural studies, reflecting a commitment to interdisciplinary dialogue. Current research emphasizes comparative philosophy of religion and the application of existentialist thought to contemporary ethical dilemmas.
