Joel Rasmussen is an Associate Professor of Theology at the University of Notre Dame’s Department of Theology, housed within the College of Arts Letters. Previously, he held positions at the University of Oxford as Professor of Historical and Philosophical Theology in the Faculty of Theology and Religion, Mansfield College Professorial Fellow, and Senior Research Fellow of Campion Hall. His research bridges theology, philosophy, and intellectual history, focusing on the interplay between Christianity, European/American philosophy, and modern literature. He directed the Oxford Centre for Theology and Modern European Thought and co-edited the 11-volume critical edition of Kierkegaard’s Journals and Notebooks (Princeton University Press). His publications span Kierkegaard studies, Hegelianism, Schelling’s philosophy, and modern theological debates.

Research Interests: Explores intersections between theology and modern European/American thought, with special emphasis on existentialism, post-Kantian idealism, and literary theology.
