- M.S., Forest Science, University of Idaho, 1978
- Ph.D., Plant Pathology, University of Minnesota, 1985
Dr. Livingston's research focuses on the health of forest ecosystems, particularly the interplay between climate change, land-use history, and invasive species. His work investigates tree pests and diseases such as beech bark disease and Caliciopsis canker, with special emphasis on eastern white pine decline. He integrates field-based discoveries into his teaching to enhance student learning.
His sponsored research includes multiple USDA-funded projects assessing the impact of pathogens on wood quality, lumber yield, and silvicultural management strategies. Though no publications are listed, his research consistently targets forest health under environmental stress and invasive threats.
- Impact of Caliciopsis canker on white pine wood quality and lumber yield (USDA ARS, $128,273)
- Lumber Yield Based on Caliciopsis Symptom Severity Ratings (USDA Forest Service, $11,300)
- Extent and severity of Caliciopsis canker of white pine (USDA Forest Service, $77,730)
- Sustaining Wabanaki Traditions through Adaptations: Preparing for the Emerald Ash Borer (Northern States Research Cooperative, $58,178)
Dr. Livingston advises and mentors students through both undergraduate and graduate coursework and research initiatives. His administrative leadership includes chairing a multistate research project and contributing to the Maine Agricultural and Forest Experiment Station. He is actively involved in outreach and applied forest science.
His research is conducted through field-based investigations and collaborative projects, emphasizing sustainable forest management and ecological resilience. He leverages Maine’s diverse forest ecosystems as a living laboratory for both research and education.
