William H. Livingston is an Associate Professor in the School of Forest Resources at the University of Maine and Chair of the NE 1601 Multi-state Project on White Pine Health. He holds a B.S. in Forestry (1976, Michigan Technological University), M.S. in Forest Science (1978, University of Idaho), and Ph.D. in Plant Pathology (1985, University of Minnesota). His research focuses on forest health dynamics, including tree pest interactions, climate impacts, and silvicultural management. He teaches courses like Tree Pests and Disease (SFR 457/557), Forest Vegetation (SFR 107), and introductory forest resources.
Dr. Livingston’s research emphasizes white pine health, drought effects, invasive species impacts, and cultural-ecological assessments of black ash. His work has been supported by grants from USDA ARS, USDA Forest Service, and the Northern States Research Cooperative. Notable projects include assessing Caliciopsis canker impacts on white pine lumber yield and evaluating hemlock woolly adelgid risks.
His publications in Forest Ecology and Management and Journal of Forestry highlight interdisciplinary approaches to forest health challenges. Livingston advocates for student success through practical field experiences and integrates research into classroom teaching.
