William Kim, MD, is a Distinguished Professor and Chair of the Department of Medicine-Oncology at the UNC School of Medicine, affiliated with the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. He holds additional professorships in Genetics and Pharmacology. His research focuses on cancer genetics, particularly renal cell carcinoma (RCC) and bladder cancer, utilizing Next-Generation sequencing and genetically engineered mouse models to identify genomic and epigenetic drivers of cancer. His work aims to translate these findings into novel therapeutic strategies.
Dr. Kim leads the Kim Lab, exploring tumor initiation, progression, and therapeutic resistance mechanisms. He collaborates across disciplines within the Lineberger Cancer Center and UNC Health, contributing to advancements in precision oncology. His contributions include seminal studies on VHL gene inactivation in RCC and molecular classifications of bladder cancer subtypes.
Publications span clinical trials, immunotherapy innovations, and molecular mechanisms of cancer, with recent emphasis on immune checkpoint inhibitors and tumor microenvironment dynamics. His research bridges basic science and clinical application, impacting patient care through personalized treatment approaches.
