William James Adams is the Shorey Peterson Professor in Industrial Organization and Arthur F. Thurnau Professor of Economics at the University of Michigan, where he has taught since 1973. He holds a PhD in Economics from Harvard University (1973) and has been honored for exceptional teaching, including the Golden Apple Award and Arthur F. Thurnau Professorship. His research focuses on industrial organization, European economic integration, and public policies, with notable work on restructuring the French economy post-WWII. He has served as Chair of the Economics Department, Director of the Center for West European Studies, and Associate Dean of LSA for Faculty Affairs.
Adams has held visiting professorships at Harvard, Aix-Marseille, and other institutions, and has advised the Federal Trade Commission and U.S. foreign policy entities. His affiliations include the Brookings Institution and the Jean Monnet Foundation. Married to a Professor Emerita of Pediatrics, he has two grown sons.
