Adam C. Simon is the Arthur F. Thurnau Professor of Earth & Environmental Sciences at the University of Michigan, affiliated with the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences within the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts. His research focuses on understanding geological processes forming mineral deposits and ensuring sustainable resource extraction. He holds a Ph.D. in Geology from the University of Maryland (2003) and an MS from Stony Brook University (1997).
Research interests include experimental petrology, geochemistry, economic geology, and the intersection of mining with climate change mitigation. Current projects examine Chilean iron belts, sulfur mobility in magmatic systems, and copper’s critical role in renewable energy infrastructure. Recent work highlights gender disparities in mineral naming and the challenges of U.S. copper supply for electrification.
His contributions have been featured in American Mineralogist, Great Lakes Now, and Michigan News. Advising includes graduate student Christopher Emproto. Simon advocates for balanced policy approaches to reconcile resource demand with environmental stewardship.
