Andrei S. Markovits

Andrei S. Markovits is an Arthur F. Thurnau Professor and Karl W. Deutsch Collegiate Professor of Comparative Politics and German Studies at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He holds joint appointments in Political Science, Germanic Languages and Literatures, and Sociology within the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA). His research focuses on European politics, political ideologies, and the intersection of sports with politics and culture. Markovits has held visiting professorships at institutions including Leuphana University (Germany), the University of Vienna, and Stanford University's Center for Advanced Study.

Education: PhD (Political Science), MBA, MA (Philosophy), and BA from Columbia University. He also holds an honorary doctorate from Leuphana Universität Lüneburg.

Research interests include anti-Americanism, German political culture, social movements, and the global impact of sports. His notable works analyze the cultural dynamics of soccer in Europe and North America, the evolution of the European Left, and the role of collective memory in German politics. He received Germany's highest civilian honor, the Bundesverdienstkreuz Erster Klasse, for his contributions to German studies.

Awards include the Golden Apple Award for teaching excellence at the University of Michigan and recognition in Marquis Who's Who publications. Markovits has advised numerous students and contributed to research centers like the Center for Russian, East European, & Eurasian Studies (CREES) and the Weiser Center for Europe and Eurasia.

His academic career spans over four decades, with over 50 books and articles. Notable books include Uncouth Nation (2007), Gaming the World (2010), and Sportista (2012). Current roles include leadership in interdisciplinary research initiatives and editorial collaborations.
