William J. Bouwsma was Sather Professor of History, Emeritus at UC Berkeley. He served as chairman of the Department of History (1966-1967, 1981-1983) and vice chancellor for academic affairs (1967-1969). His research focused on European cultural history during the Renaissance and Reformation periods.
Bouwsma's scholarship examined the tensions between Renaissance humanism and religious movements, particularly analyzing Venetian politics, John Calvin's theology, and the broader cultural shifts in early modern Europe. His work traced how Renaissance values transformed amidst Counter-Reformation pressures.
His 1978 American Historical Association presidential address addressed fundamental shifts in Western historical interpretation frameworks.
