Dr. William Hutchison is a Principal Research Fellow and Research Fellow at the School of Earth & Environmental Sciences, University of St Andrews. His research focuses on magmatic systems, integrating geophysical, geochemical, and geological data to understand volcanic processes and their societal impacts. He leads a UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship aimed at advancing ice core geochemical techniques to study volcanic eruptions' climate effects. He actively supervises postgraduate students and collaborates with volcanologists, historians, and paleoclimatologists.
His research interests include rift volcanism, volcano monitoring, geothermal exploration, and mineral resources. Recent projects involve identifying volcanic eruption sources through ice cores and sediment records, with applications to climate modeling and hazard assessment.
Dr. Hutchison has published extensively on topics such as tephrochronology, climate forcing of eruptions, and mantle dynamics. His work bridges interdisciplinary fields to address global volcanic hazards and sustainable resource development.
