Philipp Ruprecht is an Associate Professor in the Department of Geological Sciences and Engineering at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR). His research focuses on volcanic systems, magma dynamics, and the interplay between magmatic processes and ore formation. He combines fieldwork, petrology, and geochemical analyses to study volcanic hazards, magma mixing, and crustal differentiation. Ruprecht has conducted extensive research in the Americas, Western Pacific, and Europe, with a strong emphasis on Andean volcanoes, particularly Volcán Quizapu and Cordón Caulle.
Education:
- B.Sc. Geosciences, Georg-August Universität Göttingen, Germany (2001)
- Diplom Geosciences (M.Sc. equivalent), Georg-August Universität Göttingen (2004)
- Ph.D. Geological Sciences, University of Washington, Seattle (2009)
Research Interests: Magma mixing timescales, volcanic eruption dynamics, magmatic volatile budgets, ore genesis linked to magmatism, and the application of mineral chemistry to interpret magmatic processes. His work integrates experimental petrology, numerical modeling, and field observations.
Group & Labs: Leads the UNR Volcano Research Group, which includes graduate students and postdocs working on projects ranging from Andean volcanic systems to Nevada's volcanic fields. The group emphasizes field-based studies and collaborative international projects.
Grants & Funding: Involved in NSF-funded projects like the FRES Project-CHILCO, focusing on volcanic processes and hazards in Chilean volcanoes. Active in experimental investigations of magmatic systems.
