Kurt S. Panter is a Professor in the Department of Geology within the School of Earth, Environment and Society at Bowling Green State University (BGSU), a position he has held since 2018 after progressing from Assistant Professor (2000-2006) to Associate Professor (2006-2018). His academic career includes prior roles as a Visiting Assistant Professor at Western State College of Colorado and a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the New Mexico Institute of Mining & Technology.
He earned his B.A. in Geology from Western State College of Colorado (1986), followed by an M.S. (1990) and Ph.D. (1995) from the New Mexico Institute of Mining & Technology. His educational foundation underpins his expertise in Earth sciences.
Dr. Panter's research centers on igneous petrology, geochemistry, and volcanology, with specialized focus on alkaline magma systems, magma mixing processes, trace element geochemistry, isotopic analysis, and glacial-volcanic interactions. His fieldwork spans Antarctica, Ecuador, and North American volcanic regions, integrating laboratory analyses with geological observations to unravel magmatic and volcanic processes.
His publication record reveals strong emphasis on Antarctic subglacial volcanism, magma source characterization, and eruptive dynamics, with recent work analyzing Miocene ice-volcano interactions in Antarctica and explosive eruptions at Cotopaxi Volcano. These studies frequently employ geochemical transects, isotopic systems, and advanced morphometric analyses to address fundamental questions in magmatism and paleoclimate.
Dr. Panter's research is supported by National Science Foundation grants including NSF-PLR 1443576 (investigating Antarctic sub-ice volcanoes for ice sheet modeling) and NSF ANT-0943274 (examining alkaline magmatism in the Ross Sea), reflecting his leadership in collaborative international projects with institutions like the University of Leicester and Scripps Institution of Oceanography.
He teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in Igneous Petrology and Volcanology at BGSU, mentoring students in field-based geological research while maintaining active laboratory and analytical work through his ongoing Antarctic and volcanic field projects.
