Lydia Harmon is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Geology at Occidental College. She holds a B.A. from Occidental College and M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees from Vanderbilt University. Her research focuses on magmatic processes and tectonic influences governing volcanic eruptions, employing fieldwork, laboratory analysis, and computational modeling. Key areas include igneous petrology, volcanology, and geochemistry, with emphasis on magma storage, eruption dynamics, and tectonic interactions.
Her work explores mechanisms behind silicic volcanism, magma body geometry, and geobarometry techniques for determining crystallization conditions. Notable projects include studies of the Taupō Volcanic Zone (New Zealand), Colombia’s flat-slab subduction zones, and Chilean Andean systems. Her methodologies integrate phase-equilibrium modeling (e.g., Rhyolite-MELTS) with field-based tephra analysis and crystal size distribution studies.
Lydia’s research highlights the interplay between magmatic processes and tectonic settings, contributing to understanding volcanic hazards and crustal evolution. She actively participates in advancing petrological analysis and mentoring students in geological field and lab techniques.
