William Graves is a Professor and Director of the Biodesign Beus CXFEL Lab at Arizona State University. His work focuses on developing compact free-electron lasers (CXFEL) and advanced X-ray technologies, with a particular emphasis on nanopatterning electron beams, laser-electron synchronization, and coherent X-ray generation. He leads interdisciplinary research initiatives in photon science, including the Mid-Scale RI-2 CXFEL consortium and the ASU compact X-ray light source (CXLS).
Graves' research spans experimental and theoretical studies of ultrafast laser systems, electron beam dynamics, and inverse Compton scattering. His team designs high-brightness photoinjectors, RF systems, and diagnostic tools for next-generation X-ray sources. Recent projects include optimizing laser-based undulators, enhancing X-ray imaging via AI, and exploring applications in phase-contrast imaging and structural biology.
Key contributions include nanopatterned electron beams for temporal coherence control, synchronization methods for charged particle-light pulses, and compact FEL designs. His lab collaborates with national facilities and industry partners to advance photon science infrastructure and applications in materials science, medical imaging, and quantum optics.
Graves has overseen major projects like the CXLS RF system commissioning and the ASU CXFEL project, demonstrating leadership in large-scale experimental physics. His work bridges fundamental research with applied technologies, aiming to make advanced X-ray tools accessible for broader scientific communities.
