Professor William Gaze is a distinguished Professor of Microbiology at the University of Exeter's Department of Public Health and Sport Sciences. His research focuses on the evolution and dissemination of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) within microbial communities across human, animal, and environmental microbiomes, with a particular emphasis on aquatic environments. He leads a research group of over 20 members funded by £4 million in AMR-related grants.
- Current Appointment: Professor, College of Medicine and Health, University of Exeter (2018–present)
- Prior Appointments: Associate Professor (2016–2018), Senior Lecturer (2011–2015), Exeter Medical School; Senior Research Fellow, University of Warwick (2008–2011); Research Fellow, University of Birmingham (2007–2008)
- Leadership Roles: Member of University Senate, departmental leadership team, GW4 AMR Alliance Steering Committee; Co-lead of Exeter Microbes & Society network (300+ researchers)
His research integrates interdisciplinary approaches to address fundamental questions about AMR evolution in natural environments, landscape-scale dissemination, and human exposure risks. Projects include developing international AMR surveillance strategies, tackling AMR through knowledge exchange, and exploring ecological drivers of drug-resistant pathogens in aquatic systems. He also leads a UK–Argentina collaboration on reducing antimicrobial use in beef feed-lots.
- Scientific Awards: NERC Knowledge Exchange Fellowships (2019, 2021), NERC Discipline Hopping Award
Professor Gaze advises the United Nations, WHO, UK and overseas governments, and regulatory bodies on AMR policies. He has delivered invited presentations on five continents, emphasizing stakeholder engagement across academia, industry, and government to advance AMR solutions.
