William Fagan is a Distinguished University Professor in Biology at University of Maryland's College of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences. He integrates field biology with theoretical models to address questions in spatial ecology and conservation biology.
His research examines animal movement patterns, extinction risk quantification, metapopulation dynamics, and ecological responses to environmental change. Current projects involve machine learning approaches to movement data, conservation prioritization algorithms, and cross-scale ecological processes.
Professor Fagan teaches Principles of Ecology and Evolution (BSCI 160), Extinction Risk (HONR 238N), Theoretical Ecology (BIOL 708T), and Data Analysis Practicum (BIOL 708U). His honors include Guggenheim Fellowship, AAAS and ESA fellowships, and multiple teaching awards.
