Dov F Sax is a Professor of Environment and Society and Professor of Ecology, Evolution, and Organismal Biology at Brown University. His research examines species invasions, extinction dynamics, and climate change impacts on biodiversity through ecological studies and biogeographic syntheses. Sax aims to inform natural resource policy through understanding ecological systems.
Education:
- PhD, University of New Mexico (1999)
- BA, University of California, Berkeley (1992)
Research focuses on conservation biology, biogeography, climate change adaptation, and invasion ecology. His work integrates local-scale experiments with global analyses to understand biodiversity responses to environmental change, particularly species extinction risks and conservation strategies under climate change.
Publications demonstrate consistent focus on climate change impacts, niche dynamics, and conservation strategies. Recent work emphasizes biotic homogenization, climatic niche shifts, extinction forecasting, and reassessment of non-native species roles. Articles frequently integrate paleoecological data with contemporary observations.
Scientific Awards:
- Highly Cited Researcher (Thomson Reuters, 2014, 2015, 2016)
- Aldo Leopold Fellow (2009)
Significant research funding includes:
- SERDP grant: 'Conserving Threatened Plants in a Non-stationary World' ($1,106,062)
- NSF grants including 'Spatial and Temporal Dynamics of Local Extinctions' ($395,364)
- Multiple collaborative grants from NSF, US Forest Service, and Cedar Tree Foundation
