Dr. William F. Schulz serves as an Adjunct Professor of Public Administration at New York University's Wagner School of Public Service and an Affiliated Professor at Meadville/Lombard Theological School. He is the retired President and CEO of the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee (UUSC), a nonsectarian organization advancing human rights and social justice globally. Previously, he led Amnesty International USA as Executive Director from 1994 to 2006, conducting human rights missions in Liberia, Tunisia, Northern Ireland, and Sudan.
His research centers on human rights frameworks, social justice advocacy, and the intersection of public policy with international governance. Schulz critically examines U.S. foreign policy impacts on global human rights standards, particularly regarding post-9/11 security measures and torture practices. His work bridges academic theory with field-based human rights monitoring and policy advocacy.
Key publications include:
- "In Our Own Best Interest: How Defending Human Rights Benefits Us All"
- "Tainted Legacy: 9/11 and the Ruin of Human Rights"
- "The Phenomenon of Torture"
- "The Future of Human Rights: US Policy for a New Era"
These works establish him as a leading voice analyzing the erosion and strategic defense of human rights norms in contemporary geopolitics.
