William Curtin is a Professor of Engineering at Brown University's School of Engineering, returning in 2023 after 11 years as Director of the Institute of Mechanical Engineering at EPFL (Switzerland). He holds a ScB/ScM in Physics from Brown (1981) and a PhD in Theoretical Physics from Cornell (1986). His research focuses on multiscale modeling of material behavior, fracture mechanics, and advanced materials like High Entropy Alloys. He has secured over $36M in research funding and led major initiatives including the NSF Materials Research Science and Engineering Center.
- Education: Brown University (ScB/ScM Physics), Cornell University (PhD Theoretical Physics)
- Key Roles: Former Director, Center for Advanced Materials Research; Former Director, GM/Brown Collaborative Research Lab
Research interests include lightweight metal alloys, hydrogen embrittlement, and atomistic modeling of dislocation mechanics. He teaches courses such as Dynamics and Vibrations (ENGN 0040) and Continuum Mechanics (ENGN 2210). Collaborators at Brown include Professors Pradeep Guduru and Sharvan Kumar.
Recipient of the Guggenheim Fellowship (2005-06) for multiscale modeling research. His work bridges computational and experimental studies with global collaborators.
