William C. Goedel, PhD is an Associate Professor in the Department of Epidemiology at Brown University's School of Public Health. As a social epidemiologist, he leads research using geographic information systems (GIS) to analyze neighborhood-level health disparities and guide public health policy. His collaborative work with the Rhode Island Department of Health focuses on pressing health challenges including asthma, cancer, COVID-19, drug overdose, and vaccine-preventable diseases. He serves as Director of the Doctoral Program in Epidemiology and is a faculty affiliate at Brown's Pandemic Center.
Dr. Goedel completed his PhD in Epidemiology at Brown University (2020) and undergraduate degree in global public health and sociology at New York University (2017). He teaches courses including 'Fundamentals of Epidemiology,' 'Foundations of Spatial Analysis in Public Health,' and developed the innovative 'Epidemiology of Hope: Historical Perspectives on Public Health in the Ocean State.'
His research examines how neighborhood conditions shape population health through two primary programs: 1) Applied spatial epidemiology quantifying disease burden disparities across communities, and 2) Historical epidemiology using archival records to study past public health challenges. Current projects include analyzing the 1918-1920 influenza epidemic in Providence and documenting the evolution of public health education at Brown.
Goedel's 96+ publications demonstrate consistent focus on health equity challenges, particularly HIV prevention among marginalized populations, opioid overdose prevention, and spatial analysis methodologies. Recent work explores long-acting PrEP formulations, COVID-19 impacts on prevention services, and community-based overdose interventions.

As doctoral program director, Goedel advises graduate students and champions admissions processes evaluating both accomplishments and growth potential. His research is supported by grants including a seed award from Brown's Office of the Vice President of Research. At the Pandemic Center, he leads initiatives building data-driven decision capacity at local health departments.
Dr. Goedel co-edits the upcoming 7th edition of Friis and Sellers' Epidemiology for Public Health Practice and leads the Spatial Epidemiology Research Group at Brown, collaborating with state health agencies and community partners to translate research into practice.
