William Chester Jordan is the Dayton-Stockton Professor of History at Princeton University, where he has served as Department Chair (2008-2017) and teaches medieval history. His research focuses on medieval European governance, religion, and society. Affiliated with the Shelby Cullom Davis Center for Historical Studies and the Medieval Studies Program, he has held leadership roles in numerous scholarly organizations.
Education: AB from Ripon College, PhD in History from Princeton University. His work spans monographs on Louis IX, the Great Famine, medieval credit systems, and church-state dynamics. He has been honored with prestigious awards including the Haskins Medal and Princeton's Behrman Award for humanities and teaching excellence.
His 15+ books reveal a sustained engagement with medieval political theology, monarchical power, and interfaith relations. Recent works explore Louis IX's governance and conversions from Islam. Editorial contributions include encyclopedias for students and scholars. He currently serves on boards for Princeton University Press, the American Historical Review, and Jerusalem's Institute for Advanced Studies.
