William C.K. Pomerantz is the Merck Professor of Chemistry, Distinguished University Teaching Professor, and McKnight Land-Grant Professor at the University of Minnesota, affiliated with the Department of Chemistry. His research spans chemical biology, organic synthesis, and bioanalytical chemistry, focusing on protein-protein interactions (PPIs) and epigenetic regulation.
Using fluorine-based chemical probes and advanced techniques like 19F NMR and MRI, his lab develops synthetic molecules to disrupt dysregulated PPIs, aiming to elucidate molecular mechanisms in transcription factors and epigenetic complexes. This work holds promise for drug discovery targeting diseases like HIV and brain cancer.
The lab emphasizes interdisciplinary training in organic synthesis, protein biochemistry, and fragment-based drug design. Pomerantz is affiliated with the Departments of Medicinal Chemistry and Biochemistry, Molecular Biology & Biophysics, as well as the Epigenetics Consortium.
Laboratory: Located in Smith Hall (215 and 439A), the Pomerantz Lab fosters collaborative research, with recent recognition of its undergraduate students at the Cornell University x Ithaca College Chemistry Undergraduate Research Symposium.
