William C. Earnshaw is a Professor and Wellcome Trust Principal Research Fellow at the Wellcome Centre for Cell Biology, University of Edinburgh, since 1996. Previously, he held positions at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine (1982-1996) as Professor of Cell Biology and Anatomy and Associate Professor of Medicine.
- Ph.D., Biology, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1977)
- B.A., Colby College (1972), summa cum laude
His research focuses on mitotic chromosome assembly, segregation, and kinetochore function, using multidisciplinary approaches including proteomics, synthetic biology, and advanced imaging. Key achievements include identifying the first centromere proteins, discovering the chromosomal passenger complex (CPC), and designing the first human synthetic artificial chromosome.
Dr. Earnshaw has authored over 368 publications, cited >59,687 times (h=128), and co-authored the textbook Cell Biology (4th edition, 2022). His lab has developed groundbreaking tools like chemical-genetic systems for protein depletion and interdisciplinary models for chromosome structure.
- Fellow, Royal Society of London (2013)
- Fellow, Academy of Medical Sciences (2009)
- Fellow, Royal Society of Edinburgh (2002)
- EMBO Member (1999)
Current lab members include postdoctoral fellows Dr. Fernanda Cisneros Soberanis, Dr. Sam Corless, Dr. Moonmoon Deb, Dr. Natalia Kochanova, Dr. Bram Prevo, Dr. Lucy Remnant, Dr. Itaru Samejima, and Dr. Kumiko Samejima. Former trainees like Shinya Ohta and Oscar Molina have contributed to chromatin and condensin research.
