William Butt is a Professor of Cello at the Royal Irish Academy of Music (RIAM) in Dublin, Ireland. A distinguished performer and educator, he specializes in classical cello repertoire and chamber music. His career spans solo performances with major orchestras, including the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland and BBC orchestras, and extensive touring in Europe and Asia. He is a member of the Esposito String Quartet and has recorded landmark works by Bach, Britten, and contemporary composers.
Education: Studied at the Royal Northern College of Music under Moray Welsh, later with Antonio Lysy in Montreal. Notable achievements include winning the Muriel Taylor Competition and Royal Society of Arts award. He performs on a 1690 Giovanni Grancino cello.
Research interests focus on Baroque and modern cello repertoire interpretation, with emphasis on historical performance practices and contemporary compositions. His recordings of Bach and Britten suites have received critical acclaim in international press.
Performance highlights include solo tours in China (2008–2013), Irish premieres of Walton and Dvořák concertos, and regular recitals at venues like the National Concert Hall. He has also contributed to BBC Radio 3, RTE, and CBC broadcasts.
